What is this incredible organization, what does it do, and who is a part of it?

In 2002, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, created 1% For The Planet and started a global movement. Since then, 1% For The Planet has certified more than $250 million in support to approved environmental nonprofits.

“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.” -Yvon Chouinard

The idea behind 1% For The Planet is simple: because companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should protect those resources. Currently, in the United States only 3% of total philanthropy goes to environmental causes. On top of that, government funding for the environment is variable even in the best of times. The global community - every business, every organization, every individual - has the opportunity to take responsibility for the planet and drive positive change.

Each company, once committing and joining 1%, is connected with high-impact nonprofit partners that align with the individual company values. By being a member of 1% For The Planet, regardless if a company has turned a profit, it will donate 1% of it’s earnings to approved environmental organizations.

Today, there are over 3,000 members of 1% For The Planet—a beautiful growing global movement with momentum to change the path of how corporations exist and contribute to society and the planet.

Why is it important to be certified?

To put it simply, a company that is a member of 1% For The Planet is being held up to standards and a commitment—unfortunately there are many companies that say they are doing good for the planet or give back, but aren’t. Seeing a company with this certification is a guarantee they are truly doing the good they claim.
